IHL Produced "Heritage mix" Feed
All the chicken and turkey food at the feed stores is formulated for the meat birds that they sell. These are the fast "factory" birds that gain weight incredibly fast and so need very high protein feeds. Heritage turkeys, for instance, take twice as long, 32 weeks ideally, compared with 16 weeks or less for the commercial birds. Heritage turkeys are a very small proportion of all turkeys grown, so they are ignored by the feed mills. They will stay healthy on the "regular" feed, but do better on something designed specifically for them They are the same as the turkeys of the 1940s so it makes sense to use the same feed formula as was used then, and that is exactly what Susan and Christine have done. The custom feed is based on what
Marsden and Martin recommended in the best seller they wrote called Turkey
Management, which is the maroon covered book that Bryce brought to the
meeting. People who use this formula get much better results. Ask Susan and Christine to elaborate!
